November 4. 2007 - Slade Creek, NC
After two days of overcast skies and high winds, the weather Saturday night finally cleared and we enjoyed a beautiful evening on Broad Creek. The interesting thing about this part of the Intracoastal Waterway is that there aren't moon-driven tides, but wind-driven tides. During days with north winds, we saw the water level drop by almost two feet in the anchorage - close to the draft of our vessel. As the wind subsided, the water returned to its normal level.
Sunday morning found us on the Alligator & Pungo River cut. This canal is cut through an area that has been ravaged by forest fires and is just starting to regrow. It sure looked desolate to us.
There were creeks that joined the canal every so often, but nothing that we would want to explore in Monarch.
At the end of a beautiful day of cruising, we anchored in Slade Creek. This was a beautiful anchorage that we enjoyed all to ourselves.
The closest houses were almost a mile away; after dark, the lights from only one house were visible. We witnessed a beautiful canopy of stars throughout the night.
