November 7, 2007 - Calabash Creek, SC

Today was a beautiful day, after a challenging night. We were anchored near the ICW with opposing current and wind. Jerry took on the roll of 'anchor monkey', slept in the pilothouse and had his alarm set to go off every 30 minutes, so he could check that we were still in the same spot. At 2:00 am, the winds had subsided and the boat was secure, so Jerry went to bed. At 6:30 in the morning as he was doing the daily engine room checks, he noticed that the boat was not rocking. We had swung into shallower water on the falling tide, and were resting just lightly on the bottom. ARRGHH - twice in one day! We quickly hoisted the anchor, motored off the shallows and were on our way - bright and early. Much of the day was spent traversing shallow cuts like the one pictured. Everyone's docks were WAY out of the water.

Besides interesting homes along the waterway, we see some interesting boats, like this small square rigger. We saw a few of these in marinas along the way.

Here is a casino boat we passed in southern North Carolina.

At the end of the day we passed through this pontoon bridge at Sunset Beach. This is the last remaining pontoon bridge on the ICW. It was interesting to watch as cables were pulled taut and the bridge swung to the side to allow the boat traffic to pass. Boaters have to wait until the bridgetender signals that the cables have been lowered out of the way.

You can see the road on the pontoon bridge in this picture (the guard rails for the road run next to the bridgekeeper's building).

We are anchored in Calabash Creek tonight. This anchorage is in South Carolina (another state out of the way!), about 5 miles north of Myrtle Beach. There are 13 boats in the anchorage this evening, both power and sail. We are hoping for a less eventful night than last night.
