August 14, 2009 - Heywood Island, Ontario

This morning, we took a short dinghy ride to check out a possible future anchorage, at Fox Island. This secure spot has areas where boats tuck in and tie up to shore.
We passed by the swing bridge at Little Current, which connects Manitoulin Island to mainland Ontario.
There was considerably more traffic than during our prior passage. The trawler on the left in the picture is “Izzy R”, with whom we transited Virginia’s Dismal Swamp Canal in April. We chatted on the radio for a bit as we passed.

On to Heywood Island, where we stopped last month on our way to Superior. Back then, this had been a quite anchorage, but today is Friday, and the locals (from Little Current, maybe?) are taking advantage of the excellent weather and are having a weekend-long party ashore. Lots of boats are anchored and rafted off nearby.

We had planned to stay two nights here, but with the crowds (!), we decided to up anchor after one night and move on to South Cove Harbor, on Cove Island, just off Tobermory.
