April 12-13, 2009 - Cocoa, Florida
We departed Ft. Pierce’s Harbor Isle Marina to begin our trek north. We know we are back in the USA by all the conspicuous displays of wealth along the Intracoastal Waterway. It was scenic along the 61 nautical miles we traveled, and we anchored for the night in the lee of a causeway bridge near the town of Cocoa.
The next morning, anticipating a long day, we departed about 7:45 a.m. By 10:00 we were near Cape Canaveral. The ICW twists and turns back and forth, so we could see the gantry and giant shuttle “garage” in the distance for many miles.
Unlike the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the Bahamas, the Florida waters are tannin-tinted from all the vegetation growing near the waterways. The water is the color of iced tea!
Later in the day, the weather report deteriorated, and the wind began to howl. We checked out a couple anchorages, but when we heard a tornado watch on the radio, we opted for a marina at Palm Coast. We were glad to be tied up, as during the night the wind blew, the rain poured down, and there was a fantastic lightening show!
