April 2 - 4, 2009, West End, Grand Bahama

And the waiting game continues at West End. High winds “forced” us to stay in port, and what a nice port it is!

Continuing our “vacation” tradition whenever stuck in port, we found time to pool sit and do a few laps.

As you can see, our Ginn Sur Mer Resort has a beautiful tiered pool, nice new docks and beautiful villas with gorgeous landscaping.

We picked up complimentary bikes here at the resort, and biked a few miles into town.
Like many places in the Bahamas, once we leave the grounds, the land is barren, and many homes and buildings have not yet been rebuilt from the hurricane that devastated the area – Floyd in 2005.

Marty had checked out this other area marina, and was considering it – until we learned it had been decimated by the hurricane.

One of the few town structures that seemed untouched was the Catholic Church,

which was adjacent to a large old cemetery.

We picked up one last batch of fresh conch, watching the fellow expertly clean them. Now we will have a little reminder of the Islands as we cruise north.

Once back at the resort, we were again in the luxurious gated community – very different from the way the locals live.
