October 15, 2007 - Cape May, NJ
Today was going to be a long day, and we wanted to catch a favorable tide, so we were up and out of the harbor with the commercial fleet shortly after 6 a.m. We had this beautiful sunrise to greet us. The day was perfect for a power boat on the ocean - with winds under 5 knots. With the calm seas, we saw many schools of small fish jumping around the boat, and schools of dolphins feeding on the fish. They were busy eating so none of them came along side Monarch to play in the bow and stern waves.
Much of the New Jersey coast features sandy beaches with beautiful homes. Today we also passed Atlantic City (left) with many hotels and casinos. From there on south, there were more high rises and commercial establishments. Still there were beautiful expansive beaches all the way south to Cape May.
As we entered the Cape May inlet, we saw that the commercial fishermen here knew how to keep their boats upright. We did hear on the radio that TowBoat/US had brought in a 150 foot barge with a crane to salvage the sunken boat at Barnegat Inlet. They were going to only need from 10 AM to 7 PM to complete this. Almost makes us wish we had spent the day and watched the action.
This is the harbor in Cape May. There are many marinas and a large Coast Guard station. Cape May is situated at the southern end of New Jersey between the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay.
We decided to make it a night and went to the Lobster House adjacent to the marina. This was the view we had from our water side table as we dined on whole lobsters, crab fingers, escargot, and all the trimmings. What a treat !!!!!! We'll be anchoring out for the next week to make up for the excess!
