The small town docks and the beautiful parks that many of the towns have created - best of all, most of them are free. (Albion, NY pictured)
The farmer's markets that we found along the way (North Tonawanda, NY pictured). Fresh, local produce picked just the night before.
The simple navigation. Just stay between the banks.
The locking. Locks were a highlight, providing some easy activity and friendly lockmasters to chat with.
At one lock, the lockmaster introduced us to his pet great blue heron. The bird waited until the lock emptied, then picked off the hapless fish which were trapped on the cross-beams of the lock door's inner wall.
The parade Fairport threw when Monarch came to town. (OK, actually it was their Homecoming parade and it sure seemed like everyone from the town was in it.)
