November 5, 2007 - Morehead City, NC

We transited a small portion of the Pamlico River and then the Neuse River for about 15 miles. The rest of the time we were back into the man-made canals. Apparently, money is being allocated to this portion of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to keep the depths at the designated levels. Witness the dredge shown in this photo, busy clearing the shallow areas right in the middle of the channel we were transiting! In many areas of the ICW this is not happening. That is the reason we had to run in the ocean down the coast of New Jersey.
As we came into the Beaufort/Morehead City area, the shoreline along the waterway became much more populated.

Morehead City Yacht Basin was our targeted stop for the evening. This is a big sport fishing area and Monarch nestled right in among the sport fishing boats. We walked across the road to the Sanitary Restaurant. This seafood restaurant got the name from the 1930's when their original lease for the property required them to keep the establishment clean and neat. The owners thought the name would show their good faith toward this requirement. While having dinner we confirmed that you can bring your boat in there on a first-come basis and if you have dinner, dockage is only $10.
