July 4, 2009 - Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada

On Independence Day, we departed Hilton Beach under sunny skies.

We wound our way around the north end of St. Joseph Island, with beautiful shoreline all along.

Many cottages, and boathouses, lined the channel.

We decided to stop for the night in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The marina is the Roberta Bondar Marina, named after Canada’s first female astronaut. A huge moose statue prominently marks the marina.

We docked in time to sprint over to the Farmer’s Market, which is held Saturday mornings throughout the summer. We got some homegrown fresh spinach and home-canned salsa billed as XXX Hot.

We had not known it before docking, but today is the famous Soo Tugboat races. Many of the smaller tugs were docked in our harbor.

The tug Restless was moored nearby, and was certainly the most “Bristol” or well kept.

We had read an article about Restless (here, with water cannon operating) in one of our boating magazines. The captain completed the Great Loop by himself aboard the tug.

At noon, the tugs gathered in the river to parade by and then to head for the starting line. Tugs ranged from small “pocket” tugs to the huge kind used to coax 1000-foot freighters around.

Later, we walked six miles round trip to the grocery store. Here, we passed an historic stone house and block building.

After an excellent dinner of whitefish at a nearby restaurant, we retired to the boat to sit on the foredeck and watch the fireworks display provided by the American Soo.
