June 19 - 23, 2012 - Tobermory, Ontario
A sunny morning dawned at Cabot Head and Wingfield Basin for our run to Tobermory.
Beautiful cliffs grace the northern edge of the Bruce Peninsula.
As we near Tobermory, we see the Caves, part of the Bruce Peninsula National Park.
And even closer to home is the Laura J, taking divers to explore the park.
We decide to anchor for one night in South Cove Harbor, just five miles from Tobermory.
Next, into Tobermory, and our packed social schedule.
First we had dinner with friend and talented artist/writer Carol Herman, who designed this sign for the town. Another night, we joined Lynn and Larry Graham, friends from Tobermory and Chocoloskee, Florida for a delicious home-cooked meal.
Also on tap is an excursion on the Deep Obsession, one of Lynn and Larry’s dive boats, to view the historic S.S. Keewatin. This ship was built in Scotland in 1905 and is now being towed past the Cove Island Lighthouse.
Carol comes along for the ride. The last remaining Edwardian liner, Keewatin is older than the Titanic and long served as an elegant passenger cargo ship of the Canadian Pacific Railway fleet. We imagine the parties once held in its beautifully appointed ballroom, and can almost hear strains of the orchestra.
As Larry gets us up close, we see every detail of this vessel, now being relocated to Port McNicoll on the eastern shore of the Georgian Bay, where she will become a museum.
We always enjoy Tobermory’s bustling harbor.
We also enjoy getting away, next stop South Cove Harbor for next day’s dinghy visit to the cottage at Stag Island.
After watching the Great Blue Heron pass, we hustled up to the cottage, where everything was in order.
But Martha had to be physically removed, she wanted to stay all summer. Next year!
