May 10, 2009 - Kingston, NY

Up the Hudson River, we first passed the George Washington Bridge, connecting New Jersey to the north end of Manhattan Island.

The high bluffs of the Palisades of New York line the west side of the Hudson as we depart the urban areas.

After months of no elevation of terrain in the Bahamas, we found the Catskills refreshing. Everything here is leafing out and we can smell spring in the air.

Trains, both passenger and freight, run right next to the Hudson. We see them often, on both sides of the river.

We passed the fabled West Point, the Army’s military academy.

In this photo, you can see the train coming around the corner, at the base of Stone Mountain. Above it, the road has been carved into the steep mountainside.

Further up the Hudson River, the Coast Guard hailed us on their loudspeaker, and came aboard, wanting to do an inspection. We told them (as we their colleagues just yesterday in New York Harbor!) that the Coast Guard had inspected us last month just outside Bahamian waters. They checked that paperwork briefly, and quickly departed. (Jerry thinks they really wanted a tour of our beautiful boat!) Yet another use of our “get out of jail free” card!

This stretch of the Hudson River, near the Catskills, is beautiful, and is punctuated by historic lighthouses.

We spent the night about 1½ miles up Rondout Creek, near Kingston, NY and just off the Hudson River. It was very quiet, dark and starting to get cool at night.
