May 13, 2009 - Rome, NY

Early through Lock 12, we had dead calm conditions, making for excellent cruising. We are currently on the Mohawk River. Many rivers bear the names of the Native American tribes, including Seneca, Onondaga, Oneida and Cayuga.

Lock 17 is also known as the Guillotine Lock, named for the east gate, which is pulled up over the canal. As boats enter, they get a shower as they pass directly under the dripping gate.

Lock 17 is the largest single step lock in the Erie Canal, and one of only two locks in North America with this type of entrance gate.

The adjacent town of Little Falls is picturesque, though we didn’t sightsee much as we kept a sharp eye out to avoid the many logs in the canal, which had collected upstream of the westbound gate.

We pressed on through three more locks, making our total for the day nine locks. We docked for the night at the free municipal dock in Rome, NY.
