April 23 - 29, 2012 - Norfolk, VA

This morning, we were up early, as we had a special invitation from the Deep Creek’s lock tender to join him for breakfast.
All six boats’ crews were in attendance for coffee, fruit and danish. The lock tender’s office is most attractive.
And Robert the lock tender is most hospitable.
As soon as coffee was finished, Robert locked us through the lock, and we were on our way to the busy port of Norfolk, Virginia.
We knew we had arrived when we saw this huge aircraft carrier under construction.
In sharp contrast is this antique paddle wheeler.
The town is large and spread along the waterfront.
The battleship Wisconsin is now a museum here.
We easily found our fueling stop at Portsmouth, just across the river from Norfolk.
Back on the river after fueling, we made room for the battleship Lewis & Clark, passing starboard to starboard (or, “on two whistles” as the captains say).
The Navy yard’s berths were filled with carriers, battleships and escorts. We will stay in Norfolk for a week, while Marty attends meetings at Michigan Technological University, Jerry does chores, and the Cummins mechanic comes to visit Monarch.
