May 6 - 8, 2012 - Solomons Island, MD

Departing Washington, D.C., on a bright-hazy day, we traveled down the Potomac. Astern, we saw the Capitol…..
…and the Washington Monument, each complimented by sailboats.
Alexandria is another popular harbor, on the west bank of the Potomac, and just south of Washington, D.C.
This paddlewheeler was pulling away from Alexandria’s dock.
National Harbor, the newest harbor in the area, is on the east bank of the river.
The historic Fort Washington is on the eastern shore, further south of D.C.
Mt. Vernon, George Washington’s plantation home along the Potomac and just 16 miles south of Washington, D.C., is America’s most popular historic estate. George and Martha resided here for more than 40 years. The property has a day use dock, but we have visited via land and didn’t stop.
We stopped for the night a short distance up one of the Potomac’s tributaries, the Wicomico River, at Bluff Point. Among the crab pots we found a secure anchorage.
Bright and early we were off, finishing up our transit of the Potomac River, and turning north at Point Lookout Light. Next stop up the Chesapeake is Solomon’s Island.
Solomon’s Island is just off the Chesapeake, up the Patuxent River. It is a noted boating center, with pleasure and work boats, like these McAllister Tugs.
We anchored up Mill Creek, just off Patuxent River, in a lovely residential area. A windy day caused us to spend two nights on the hook in a protected cove, just northeast of Pancake Point. We dinghied around to check out the area.
Up adjacent Back Creek, many marinas were available, with docks to access West Marine Store and other necessities.
Every type of marine service can be had at Solomon’s Island.
There is even Solomon’s Island Yacht Club.
And here’s Monarch in her protected cove on Mill Creek.
It was a fine spot to take a lay day.
